NXT and NXT UK Recap Week of 5/29/19 - With AEW in the Mix, What's NXT for NXT? Plus a Look at TakeOver XXV!
If you read my recap of this past week's Raw and Smackdown Live, you'd know that I posited a potentially interesting scenario, but we'll get to that later. First let's dig in to all the goodies from this week in NXT and NXT UK!
Let's start off at Full Sail and see what's going on with our precious NXT guys and gals.
I loved the hell out of the match between Mia Yim and Bianca Belair. Again, I know some of the movement is a little stiff, but that's part of getting better, and Belair and Yim are getting better with each and every appearance. And this match was just terrific building the rivalry between the EST and the HBIC, and that ending! I knew that Bianca's hair was going to be the difference-maker, and her scoring the pin by hitting Protect Yo' Neck by using Bianca's ponytail was just such fucking simple and beautiful booking for this match. It gives Yim a good look towards the future, and it lets everyone know that neither of these women are to be slept on. It's this kind of simple booking that would allow for some really great main roster matches but Vince is too busy thinking of stupid jokes and micro-managing the talent to the Nth degree to let something this simple go on over there.
As far as KUSHIDA vs Drew Gulak, I always say... well, you know. "If you can't give me a great match, give me a good story". And this match, like Yim vs Belair, managed to do both. Was this the most dynamic match we've ever seen? No. But it was a great technical match that wasn't designed to get huge pops from the crowd but rather show that The Time-Splitter is not only phenomenal with the spots, but he can grapple with the best catch-wrestlers in the business. This was a series of innovative lock-ups, submission attempts, reversals and finally a bridge pin that had KUSHIDA pick up the win over Gulak. I liked that they hinted that this story could possibly continue, and I'm really hoping it does. Neither Gulak or KUSHIDA (again, are we supposed to be using his name in all-caps like WALTER? I'm still not sure...) are the submission masters like Zack Sabre Jr or Minoru Suzuki, but they could potentially put on a amazing match during a TakeOver or something like that when they're given a lot more time. And for the love of God, please bring Gulak over to NXT full-time. He's so good, and like so many people on the 205 Live roster, they're just not being used to their full potential on that show.
I love the idea that Candace LeRae could be the x-factor in Io Shirai's match against Shayna for the Women's Championship. As you should all know by now, I'm a huge mark for Candace, and Io has the stuff to carry the division for a long while, so I'm super hyped for that match. But to be honest, if Shayna loses, I still hope they keep her in NXT for a while. The main roster is not ready for her type of heel yet, and Vince is going to want to change her look up as well.
I'm still here all day for Velveteen Dream vs Tyler Breeze for, well, just about anything, but the fact that they're going to be duking it out for the North American title just makes it even better. Even if they weren't that talented (and they are), just a clash of these personalities would make it worth the price of admission. There is going to be a lot of posing at TakeOver XXV between these two.
The expectedly-abridged match between Burch and Lorcan vs Forgotten Sons was something we all knew was going to be schmozzed up by an appearance either by Street Profits or Undisputed Era. And it gave me my favorite moment of the night when Dawkins and Ford came out and blindsided Jaxson Ryker and the crowd started chanting, "Thank you, Profits". That was a real bit of validation for how I feel about all the members of Forgotten Sons, and then to have Undisputed Era come in and stand tall and also drop a ladder on Ryker made me even happier. It was a perfect storm of showing how little we care about Forgotten Sons, and the literal burying of Ryker just made everything sweeter.
Across the pond, we had the forming of a new heel faction in NXT UK in the aftermath of the Dunne/WALTER rematch as WALTER was joined officially by Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel to form a faction called "Imperium". Okay, I have a slight problem with the Austrian, German and Italian guy forming a faction called Imperium, and let me explain why. Imperium, by definition, means "Absolute Power", and that's terrific, but Imperium is also a film from a few years ago where Daniel Radcliffe played a federal agent who infiltrated a white supremacist group called "Imperium". So for a film geek like me, it just felt a little uncomfortable at first, but I know that's not what they're going for, and maybe 30 people saw the film Imperium, so after my initial discomfort, I'm into it. And especially into what's coming for them because it means a three-man heel faction is going to end up facing off against British Strong Style, which is the faction of Dunne, Tyler Bate and Trent Seven. That's going to be a hell of a match to watch and a lot of fun to see how it plays out in the weeks and months to come.
There was a good tag match between Mark Coffey and Wolfgang of Gallus vs Carlos Romo and A-Kid. It wasn't exactly a massive impact match, but it was clearly there to get the good pop from the Glaswegians in the audience for Gallus picking up the win. It really is interesting how strong the Tag division in UK is comparatively to just about every other promotion which is clearly focused on the singles competitors.
Kassius Ohno vs Gentleman Jack Gallagher was just oodles of fun. I was a big fan of babyface Gallagher when he first came to 205 Live, and when he turned heel, it just didn't quite work for me, so I was happy to see him working babyface again. And I like how Ohno is actually picking up wins in NXT UK. If NXT had a "legends" section, Ohno would clearly be at the top of it, so his booking has been working for me in the UK, especially as he claims he's better at the European style of wrestling than the actual Europeans. From bell-to-bell, this was just a really terrific match and really complimented not only the styles of each competitor but the story the match was telling.
The match between Nina Samuels and champ Toni Storm for the UK Women's title was fine. Some of the movement is still a little stiff and I didn't think that they had a lot of chemistry in the ring, but it still worked well enough to keep Toni looking strong in her retaining. I wished, though, that Jazzy Gabert or some other heel had come out after the match and laid Toni out. She needs a good new rivalry and I think that having Jazzy come out would be a better way to go rather than starting out with her and Jinny against people like Xia Brookside and Isla Dawn.
I'm still waiting to get to that point where I really really get into NXT UK because it's not quite there yet for me, but as they tighten more screws on the show, it's really going to have me hooked before much longer.
Since I don't have a lot of time to spare, I'm just going to give a brief rundown of my Hopes and Predictions for TakeOver XXV!
In the 4-Way Tag Match for the vacant NXT Tag titles, we have Street Profits vs Undisputed Era vs Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch vs The Forgotten Sons. I'm still totally in love with pretty much everything that Undisputed Era is doing, so I would be pretty happy if they took the gold, but I wholeheartedly believe that it's Street Profits' time. They've been overlooked long enough, and they can do some amazing shit in that squared circle. But my fear is that they've been giving a decent push to Forgotten Sons without really building them at all as characters, and I can potentially see them going that way as well. I won't be happy about it, but at least it will give the babyface teams a merry chase.
Hope: Street Profits win the title
Prediction: Street Profits win the title
In the grudge match section with Matt Riddle vs Roderick Strong, I would be happy with either. Riddle is clearly the star-in-the-making on NXT, but Strong is a guy who's been overlooked for too long now and clearly should be in a title conversation. A lot of his singles matches have been next level stuff. And if Strong wins, a look towards the North American title would be the best next step for him. But I really feel that this is going to be the sleeper hit of the night.
Hope: Roderick Strong wins
Prediction: Matt Riddle wins
We also have Prince Pretty himself, Tyler Breeze, taking on champ Velveteen Dream for the North American title after Dominik Dijakovic ended up sidelined with injury. If this is indeed a homecoming for Tyler and not just a one-time only deal, the best way to welcome him back is with this title. I've loved the promos that Dream has cut about Breeze not being able to hack it on the main roster and his "retreat" back to NXT could be a real sticking point for Breeze if they decide to play this out. He had an interview in Newsweek about going back to NXT as being a lateral move (if you ask just about anyone, it's a step up), so let's hope he's here to stay. It's a "both these guys" scenario though, but I would be happier with a Breeze win.
Hope: Tyler Breeze wins the title
Prediction: Velveteen Dream retains
Arguably the most anticipated match for me is the NXT Women's title match with Io Shirai vs champ Shayna Baszler. Personally, I think that Io was short-changed when she lost to Toni Storm in the finals of the Mae Young Classic, so building momentum and having the fans clearly on her side is going to go a long way to make a case for Io being the next champ. Shayna has been on top a little too long and has been on a bit of a down slope since Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke came on the scene to help her out. Some fresh blood wearing the strap could really insert a shot in the arm to a Women's roster that seems to be on the come-up.
Hope: Io Shirai wins the title
Prediction: Io Shirai wins the title
And then we move to the scariest match for me on this show, and that's the rematch of Adam Cole vs champ Johnny Gargano for the NXT Championship. I know that Cole is a perennial fan favorite and it's for good reason: he's got the look, he's got the swagger, he's got the mic ability and he's got the physical ability. He's the complete package. But then there's Johnny, so often the bridesmaid and only recently the bride when it came to the NXT title, he's had the ability to showcase so much over the last year. He hasn't been involved in a match that I thought was less than absolutely stellar in a TakeOver. Hell, I'm wearing a Johnny TakeOver shirt as I sit here writing this. The odds that, in Johnny's first title defense against anyone, Johnny would lose are very low. And as much as I may love Adam Cole, I love Johnny Champion even more.
Hope: Johnny Gargano retains
Prediction: Johnny Gargano retains
But this isn't all! As I stated at the top, I wanted to discuss the hypothesis that the aspect of WWE that is going to be most affected by the rise of All Elite Wrestling is not going to be the main roster, but rather NXT. Let me now explain why I believe this.
NXT is traditionally a stepping stone to getting that big main-roster money and getting all the international acclaim and success that comes with being a top guy or girl for WWE. Initially, NXT was started as a developmental brand to teach other lesser-known indie wrestlers to wrestle the WWE way. It was also a way to develop homegrown talent into professional wrestlers. But that's not so much the case anymore. Sure, you have Velveteen Dream, but for every one of him, you have Shinsuke Nakamura, Boddy Roode, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and more recently, talent like Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O'Reilly, Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, Dominik Dijakovic, Ricochet, Aleister Black and so on; people who were already solid players in other promotions like New Japan or Ring of Honor who made the jump to NXT.
But now that AEW exists and especially after the shoot interview from the former Dean Ambrose, Jon Moxley on the Talk is Jericho podcast this week, who the hell would want to go where you know that your creative impulses are going to be stifled and your promos are all going to be pre-written by "professional" writers before you even come in the door? AEW's biggest promise is to give their talent a lot of creative freedom to express themselves through promos and matches. That might change a little by the time they start doing their weekly shows, but it's still a lot more attractive than anything that WWE might offer.
Right now, it seems like the only reason that any indie on the cusp of a breakout would head to NXT would be for the eventual possibility of being a main roster star and sell shitloads of merch and get those multi-million dollar contracts. But look at most of the NXT talent that's gone to the main roster. For every Charlotte and Becky and Seth and Roman, there's your Nakamuras, your EC3's, your Tyler Breezes, your Ascensions, your Mojos, your Asukas, your Embers, your Riotts, and yes, even your Finns. There is a lot of talent that is either under-used, misused or just totally forgotten. Wrestlers... sorry... "sports entertainers" in WWE are actually not even dealing with Vince any longer. They're just here to do the work and go home, and that's the kind of shit that I do at my workplace. I don't hate it, I don't love it. I'm just there to pay the bills, and when you finally land your dream job, that shouldn't be the way you have to go into work every day. I'm far from saying that how Moxley feels is how everyone else feels, but the speculation coming out since the Jericho podcast is that a lot more talent than expected are expressing similar sentiments.
So the likelihood of another Adam Cole or KUSHIDA or Ricochet signing with NXT is pretty low (again, unless they're just there for the hopes of the big dolla-dollas) when a company like AEW is around. And that means either one of two things: either they just commit to NXT being the third brand where they don't have to worry about going up to the main roster and still retain some of the indie spirit that NXT is obviously cultivating, or that NXT is going to have to step up its developmental end. They're going to need more homegrown talent rather than just scooping up a lot of popular indie talent, and that could be a very interesting challenge for them. Everyone on that end of the business is going to have to really do their homework. Scouting the right people in the tiny armory halls or school gyms. Hiring the right trainers, giving them the tools to thrive in NXT. Maybe we get the next Velveteen Dream.
Or maybe we get the next Eva Marie. It's all food for thought anyway.
Well, that's it for this week! TakeOver is tonight, so I'll be watching it right along with you all and it looks to be a really great show, so I'm pumped. I don't really live-tweet this stuff, and it's unlikely I'll do a live reactions blog about it, so maybe there'll just be a big ol' wrap-up on Sunday. Otherwise, we've got another week of go-homes for Raw and Smackdown as they prep for Super Showdown (which I will not be watching in its entirety, but only for the Finn/Andrade match), and of course the pre-show of TakeOver XXV this week on NXT TV, and a new ep of NXT UK! If you want more fun/weird/possibly socio-politically charged content, you are more than welcome to follow me on Twitter @donnelly92274 but otherwise stay tuned for next week's happenings here with yours truly!
